Spring has Sprung: Daffodils 2011

Yesterday morning when I glanced out our kitchen window I saw our garden's first gift of the year! While most plants are still trying to wake from their winter nap, right on queue for the first day of spring, our daffodils bloomed! After months of winter, it's so refreshing to see the first signs of spring! 

This garden needs lots of T.L.C! Between having a newborn, a one-and-a-half-year-old, and a hubby diagnosed with a brain tumor last spring my T.L.C. was definitely focused elsewhere! Although this spring I have a one-year-old, a two-and-a-half-year-old and a hubby with a brain tumor, things have settled down a bit and I think some "garden therapy" is just what I need!

Last weekend I found this 'vase' while "treasure hunting" in my grandma's basement! I love the signature thick rim that you find with old glassware, and the numbers measuring the ounces. I wonder what it was originally used for?

Linen Closet to China Cabinet (Part 2)

Remember our china cabinet I was working on? In my first post about the transformation it looked like this...

...Well, I've made some progress!

It is now painted...

And has knobs and door inserts!

(The knobs and wire are from Lowes.)

Initially, I was going to use Galvanized Hex Netting (Chicken Wire) for the door inserts. Though after some thought, I decided I wanted the openings smaller. So, back to Lowes I went where I picked out some Galvanized Hardware Cloth.

...I'll save the chicken wire for another project or my real chickens!

Plus, my hubby (Travis) has always liked the screen on my parent's hutch...

...and the hardware cloth is kind of a middle ground between a screen and chicken wire.

To attach the wire all I had to do was measure, cut and staple!

At first I used a heavy-duty staple gun, and it cracked the wood a bit. So, after fixing it with some wood glue I switch to a light-duty staple gun which worked great!

(Yes, it was embarrassingly messy! ...I'm keeping it real!)

We are very pleased with how it turned out! I can't wait to put my dishes in it! We're also very excited about having more open space in our dinning room (once we move the existing display shelf)!

Lavender Basket

It's time for another fun, easy and inexpensive project "CHC"! Gotta love those, right? ...And you only need four items!

What I used…

• Dried Lavender (Hobby Lobby)
• Preserved Sheet Moss (Hobby Lobby)
• Rattan Wallbasket (Hobby Lobby- originally $10, got it 50% Off)
• Clay Tag (Freckled Laundry Etsy Shop)
• ...I also used a woven drop cloth as my work surface for a quick clean up (I simply shook it outside).

Step 1:

Line the front side of the basket with moss. Push it all the way down to the bottom and leave some peeking through the top.

(Note: The one bag of sheet moss was the perfect amount for this basket.)

Step 2 & 3:

I used a piece of natural jute to make a loop for hanging, but you could probably just hang it by it's metal frame as well. Next, fill the basket with dried lavender. Pull the lavender apart to make the arrangement fuller.

Step 4:

Hang your clay tag. Slip the twine around a vine or wire and loop it through.

Lavender Basket...

A great way to create something you really love… is to use things you love individually!

For instance...


I love wire.

I love vines.

I love baskets.

I love moss.

I love lavender.

...Especially, in our bedroom (or bath), to me it symbolizes relaxation and it makes me feel relaxed just by seeing (or smelling) it!

And...

I love clay tags!
